Overview

Overview: Embark on an unforgettable adventure to the summit of Hunter Mountain, the second-highest peak in the Catskills at 4,040 feet. This challenging yet rewarding hike combines spectacular mountain terrain with rich history and culminates with panoramic views from the highest elevation fire tower in New York State. As you trek through diverse forest ecosystems, you'll witness the transition from hardwood forests to the enchanting high-elevation spruce-fir zone that cloaks the summit. The trail offers multiple spectacular viewpoints along the way, but the true reward awaits at the peak—a historic 60-foot steel fire tower that provides unrivaled 360-degree views of the surrounding mountains, valleys, and on exceptionally clear days, vistas extending to five states.

Your day doesn't end at the summit. After exploring the restored fire observer's cabin and learning about the mountain's fascinating history, you'll descend to the stunning Diamond Notch Falls—a picturesque 25-foot waterfall cascading over moss-covered shale ledges in an amphitheater-like setting. There, you can cool off with a refreshing dip in the clear mountain waters before heading to the renowned West Kill Brewery, where craft beers made with pure mountain spring water and locally-sourced ingredients await. This "Brews & Views" adventure perfectly pairs physical challenge with natural beauty and local flavor, creating a quintessential Catskills experience that showcases the region's majestic wilderness and vibrant craft beverage culture.

  • *All times are estimates. We adjust every adventure to the pace and needs of the group. Travel time are subject to many factors, including weather and traffic.

This 9.1-mile hike with approximately 1,940 feet of elevation gain is rated as challenging due to its length and several steep, scrambly sections. Participants should have some hiking experience and be in good physical condition. The trails can be rocky and uneven in places, so sturdy hiking boots are strongly recommended. Weather on the mountain can change rapidly, so dressing in layers is advised even during summer months.

All hiking equipment, transportation, and meals are provided, including a gourmet breakfast and lunch. Participants should bring at least 2 liters of water, wear comfortable hiking clothes, and pack a few extra layers for the potentially cooler summit temperatures. Additional recommended items include a rain shell, sunglasses, and a hat. Optional swimming at Diamond Notch Falls is available for those interested, so bringing a small towel and change of clothes is suggested. The brewery visit includes time to purchase beers and food truck offerings (not included in the trip price).

This experience does not have a physical location and can be attended online.
