Brace yourself for an unforgettable ride through the heart of Maine’s most intense whitewater. The Penobscot River offers a legendary rafting experience, carving its way through dramatic gorges and rushing over world-famous rapids. With Mount Katahdin towering above you, this Class IV-V journey combines heart-pounding action with awe-inspiring views. 

From narrow chutes to standing waves and vertical drops, this trip delivers a full day of adventure—and a true badge of bragging rights for thrill-seekers.


  • The trip runs from June through August
  • Total river time: 5–7 hours
  • Minimum age: 14 years and 100 lbs
  • Raft size: 5–9 participants per boat
  • Rapids difficulty: Class IV–V
  • Includes riverside lunch and mid-trip snack
  • Gear provided: helmet, PFD; wetsuits/splash gear available to rent
  • Shuttle transportation to and from the river included
  • Allow a full day for this experience

Arrival and Check-In
Meet at our Millinocket outpost by 7:30 AM for registration and gear fitting.

Gear Up and Orientation
Get suited with helmets, PFDs, and optional wetsuits, then receive a full river safety briefing.

Warm-Up and River Entry
Head to McKay Station to meet your guide and learn paddling commands before entering Ripogenus Gorge.

The Adventure Course
Navigate adrenaline-filled rapids like Exterminator, The Crib Works, and Troublemaker, with breaks to swim and admire the towering granite cliffs.

Wrap Up and Return
End with a final push through a chain of Class III-IV rapids, then ride back to base for a photo/video preview of your trip.

What to Bring:

  • Quick-dry clothing and water shoes

  • Groups of 10+ can request custom trips on weekdays (Tues–Thurs)

Weather & Safety:

  • Trips run rain or shine unless conditions are unsafe
  • All guides are licensed and certified in swiftwater rescue
  • Expect strong currents, cold water, and rapid changes in terrain

Guide Gratuity:

  • Not included but always appreciated
