Learn to kayak in the breathtaking paradise of White Salmon, Washington, where crystal-clear blue rivers flow from snow-capped volcanoes through lush, moss-covered basalt canyons. This beginner-friendly whitewater kayaking course offers the perfect mix of skill-building and scenic adventure, designed specifically for those new to the sport.

Over the course of three action-packed days, world-class instructors will guide you through foundational techniques from outfitting and paddle strokes to self-rescue and reading water. You’ll train in a variety of settings including calm flatwater and gentle Class I–II rapids, ideal for developing confidence on the river.

Enjoy top-notch riverside facilities with a dedicated rolling pool, classroom space, and convenient access to multiple river locations. With personal coaching and supportive instruction, you’ll go from total novice to capable paddler in no time while soaking in one of the most stunning whitewater regions in the Pacific Northwest.


  • 3-day guided whitewater kayak instruction

Itinerary

Day 1 – Flatwater Foundations

  • Meet at our riverside headquarters in the Columbia River Gorge
  • Introduction to kayaking gear, safety practices, and boat fitting
  • Practice wet exits, T-rescues, and balancing on flatwater
  • Learn paddle strokes, edging, and basic water reading

Day 2 – River Skills Development

  • Travel to a nearby Class I-II river stretch
  • Practice peel-outs, eddy turns, ferrying, and rescue skills
  • Learn to read the current, scout small rapids, and safely navigate moving water

Day 3 – Confidence on the Water

  • Reinforce techniques on a new river or repeat familiar waters
  • Fine-tune paddling form, control, and safety decision-making
  • Personalized feedback from instructors and end-of-course wrap-up
  • Receive recommendations for gear, next steps, and local kayaking resources

Course Duration
• 3 consecutive days of training and practice
• 5–6 hours of on-water instruction per day

Age & Experience
• Ages 13+ welcome (with guardian if under 16)
• No previous kayaking experience necessary
