Overview

Ready to take the plunge into the world of scuba diving? The SSI Open Water Diver Course is your gateway to exploring the underwater world with confidence and safety. Led by seasoned instructors and backed by the internationally recognized Scuba Schools International (SSI) curriculum, this course offers a comprehensive introduction to scuba diving through classroom instruction, pool sessions, and open-water lake dives. 

Whether you're a total beginner or looking to formalize your training, you'll walk away with lifelong certification and the skills to dive anywhere in the world.


  • Total duration: Two weeks (weekday or weekend schedule options)
  • Class sessions: Evenings; Pool sessions immediately follow class
  • Open water lake dives are scheduled on the second weekend of the course
  • Minimum age: 10 years (with guardian consent)
  • Basic swimming skills required (200m swim + 10 min tread)
  • Needed personal gear: mask, snorkel, booties, and fins
  • Rental gear provided for lake dives (BCD, regulator, wetsuit, tanks, weights, computer)
  • Lifetime SSI Open Water Diver certification included
  • Digital coursework must be completed before lake dives
  • Location entry fees are not included in the course price
  • Students are encouraged to bring food, water, sunscreen, and a towel for lake days

Arrival and Welcome Briefing
Arrive early to check in and meet your instructor. You’ll be guided through what to expect over the course of your training, with a short orientation to ensure you’re comfortable and ready.

Classroom Learning and Equipment Overview
Settle in for your academic sessions where you'll cover dive theory, safety protocols, and equipment basics. Learn how to assemble and handle your gear with confidence.

Pool Training in a Heated Indoor Facility
Jump into the warm, indoor pool for hands-on training with your scuba equipment. Practice core skills like mask clearing, regulator recovery, buoyancy control, and emergency procedures.

Open Water Lake Dives
Head out to the lake for your final check-out dives. Apply what you’ve learned in open water conditions under the close supervision of your instructor. Expect multiple dives over two days to fulfill certification requirements.

Certification Wrap-Up and Instructor Debrief
Review your progress, celebrate your accomplishments, and officially become a certified Open Water Diver! Your instructor will provide feedback, next steps, and tips for future diving adventures.

What to Bring

Location

  • Classes and pool sessions held at Tom’s Dive & Swim in Austin
  • Lake dives are typically held at Windy Point Park (Lake Travis) or Spring Lake (San Marcos)
  • Location subject to availability and instructor coordination

Group Size & Instructor Ratio

  • Small class sizes for focused instruction
  • One-on-one guidance during skill development when needed
  • Group lake dives with designated surface intervals

Age & Safety Requirements

  • Minimum age: 10 (junior certification), 15+ for standard certification
  • Must be able to complete the swim/tread test on day one
  • Medical clearance required if prompted by SSI health questionnaire

Weather & Cancellation

  • Course held rain or shine for classroom and pool sessions
  • Lake dives are subject to weather and visibility; alternate dates will be provided if rescheduled
  • Cancellations must follow shop policy; fees may apply for missed sessions

Additional Policies

  • $85 “Try Scuba” intro session available and credited toward full course if enrolled
  • Replacement fees apply for lost or damaged rental gear
  • Certification is conditional upon successful completion of all training segments
