This tour includes six stops where you’ll experience authentic Italian American cuisine while uncovering the rich heritage of The Hill, St. Louis’s historic Italian neighborhood. Stops on the day typically include the following:
J. Viviano & Sons: A beloved Italian grocer since 1949, Viviano’s is packed with imported specialties including house-cured meats, aged cheeses, handmade pasta, and olive oils that have been family favorites for generations.
Anthonino’s Taverna: This popular restaurant blends Italian and Greek heritage, but it’s best known for its award-winning toasted ravioli, crispy, golden, and stuffed with seasoned beef. A quintessential St. Louis treat.
Missouri Baking Company: This family-owned bakery has been a fixture on The Hill since 1924. Known for its fresh cannolis, almond cookies, and biscotti, everything is baked from scratch using old-world recipes.
Gelato di Riso: This charming gelateria offers handcrafted Italian gelato in bold and classic flavors like stracciatella and limoncello. Their small-batch creations are made with authentic ingredients and plenty of heart.
Volpi Foods: Established in 1902, Volpi is a fourth-generation salumeria famous for dry-cured meats like prosciutto and salami. You’ll sample their expertly aged cuts just blocks from where they’re still produced today.
St. Ambrose Catholic Church: Though not a food stop, this 1926 church is a cultural and spiritual anchor for the neighborhood. Its Romanesque architecture and storied past provide insight into the lives of early Italian immigrants.
